These are Keyswitch and Expression Map (KSEM) preset files for Spitfire's free BBC Symphony Orchestra (BBCSO) Discover edition. Each instrument's default keyswitches (starting at C-2) are mapped to KSEM. (The keyswitches can be moved in the plugin's interface, by dragging on a keyboard icon next to a padlock icon; if you move them, KSEM's mappings would need to be changed.) In addition, the KSEM Automation keyswitch (usually at C7) is mapped to KSEM for the sake of completeness, but it is probably not needed.

These instruments provide very few controllable parameters; all but one of the controllable parameters are mapped to knobs in KSEM and to corresponding MIDI CC values. The controllable parameters, which are common to all instruments, are: (1) Dynamics, (2) Expression, (3) Reverb Level, (4) Global Gain, and (5) Global Pan. Each opens up at Spitfire's default value in the preset files. The instruments also have a Tune control, but that must be mapped by the user to a MIDI CC value, and only then can it be mapped to a KSEM knob. Because it has no standard CC number, the Tune control is left unmapped.

Note about Dynamics and Expression: These are mapped to the X-Y pad of KSEM. But it is not clear that Dynamics and Expression function differently in these instruments. Expression should change volume without changing timbre; dynamics should change both volume and timbre, by switching between different samples for each dynamic level. But, per Spitfire, BBCSO Discover has only one dynamics layer per technique. With only one dynamics layer, changing dynamics should not be able to change timbre. Also note that some instruments, such as Percussion: Harp & Celeste and Percussion: Tuned Percussion, include different instruments in one interface, and each has a different instrument range. It is not possible to show two different instrument ranges on the keyboard in KSEM, so only one instrument's range is shown for these combination instruments. See the KSEM comments for each instrument to see more about the selected instrument range.

Preset bundle for all available articulations and provided patches: All-in-one, Legato, Long and Short. For the Ensemble patches you can choose whether the missing articulations are filled with placeholders. This way, these patches are consistent with the individual instruments and you can copy and paste automation envelopes between them.

The download includes presets for all instruments and articulations of the library. To use them you have to load either the legato, basic and/or extended patches in a Kontakt Multi or the individual instruments. To speed you up, I saved my .nkm files for you. A short PDF explains how to import them to the Kontakt player.

Here are two custom presets: The first version includes all provided articulations of the library and lets you switch between them in a single track. The second one concentrates on all articulations which are available for every instruments and offers 100% consistency. To use them you have to load either the legato, core and decorative patches in a Kontakt Multi or the individual instruments. The download includes a PDF with a small how-to manual and my .nkm files for the Kontakt player.

Some Spitfire libraries allow you to control the articulations with generalized UACC values (CC 32 / Sub), so that you can always control the Marcato articulation with the value 52 (53 in Ableton Live!), for example. How it works exactly is described in a PDF which is included in the download. You can use this preset for Chamber Strings, the Symphonic or Studio series, Bernard Herrmann Toolkit and other libraries as a template.

This custom preset tries to combine all available articulations of the different SYNCHRON-ized Woodwinds libraries as consistently, clearly and playable as possible in a single patch.
With the help of four MIDI CCs, you can operate the numerous variations.
The first 27 articulations are in the same place for all instruments. This allows you to easily copy & paste automation envelopes between instruments. More specific articulations vary from 28 to 32.
